Increase in the incidence of mumps is registered in Bishkek. The Center for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of Bishkek reported.
In the first quarter of 2019, at least 120 cases of mumps were reportedly registered in Bishkek, last year - only 4.
The incidence increased due to unvaccinated adults. There are people among them who have not been vaccinated in childhood (at the age of 6) due to the lack of vaccines.
The number of adults who got mumps is 86 (71.6 percent).
In addition, the number of vaccine refusers increases annually. This is dangerous because a non-immune stratum of the population is being formed. As a result, the incidence of mumps is activated.
The center reminds that epidemic parotitis is an infection caused by a virus and spreading from person to person through household items or by airborne droplets when talking, sneezing, coughing. It mainly affects the salivary glands, and possibly other glands, such as the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, and others.
The disease begins with a sharp increase in body temperature to 38-40 degrees for five - seven days.
Its symptoms are great weakness, chills, appetite disorders, headaches. Swelling and tenderness of one or both salivary glands is registered. Despite the fact that the disease in most cases has a mild or moderate form, it can not be attributed to a harmless infection.
Mumps can lead to sequelae in the form of damage to other organs, especially in adults.
Mumps most often causes complications in teenagers during puberty, as there is a risk of orchitis (inflammation of the testicles).
Acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is on the second place among the sequelae. As for the nervous system, serous meningitis is possible.
"Epidemic parotitis is a vaccine-preventable infection. The most effective in the prevention of the disease is vaccination with live attenuated vaccine. It is done twice - at the age of 1 year and 6 years," the state center stressed.
