AKIPRESS.COM - Lawmakers Almambet Shykmamatov and Altynbek Sulaimanov propose to ban exploration and mining of uranium in Kyrgyzstan until 2070.
They came up with the draft law on introduction of a moratorium on exploration and mining of uranium on Kyrgyzstani soil until 2070.
Lawmakers believe that the uranium production poses serious threat to the environment and human health. Modern methods of uranium mining do not guarantee full safety from radiation and uranium tailings exacerbate the environmental hazard.
Apart from hazard to human and environment, uranium is also an expensive raw material that might entail huge expenses.
"Perhaps, in the future, the humanity will create new safer ways of uranium mining," Sulaimanov said and hoped that his counterparts will back the bill.
