Kyrgyzstan marks 26 years since introduction of national currency

AKIPRESS.COM - Kyrgyzstan marks 26 years since introduction of its national currency som today.
The som was introduced on May 10, 1993 as official payment tool across the country. Use of Soviet rubles was allowed within 5 days until May 14, 1993, the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan said.
Since May 14, 1993, som has become the sole lawful payment tool in the country.
Introduction of the own currency of the sovereign state has become a starting point for independent economic policy and monetary policy of the National Bank.
"Reliability, buying capacity and price stability of the national currency are important indicators of economic stability of any country. For 26 years the Kyrgyz som was able to prove its independence and to keep sustainability despite economic shocks and political turbulence," the National Bank said.
