40% of fatal accidents occur on pedestrians in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, May 15, 2019. /Kabar/. "Pedestrian safety is the most urgent in the problems of a road accident," representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Kyrgyzstan Nazira Artykova told during the press conference at Kabar News Agency
In this regard, WHO representatives urge pedestrians to wear reflective signs and vests for their own safety at night time.
"Road safety is one of the most pressing problems in the world. According to the WHO data, about 1.5 million people die in road accidents every year. A traffic accident is the leading cause of death among people aged 5 to 29 years. According to WHO statistics and estimates, over a thousand people die and as many are injured every year in Kyrgyzstan as a result of road accidents," she said.
Nazira Artykova called speeding, driving while intoxicated, not using seat belts and child seats as the main causes of accidents.
Tilek Buteshov, a specialist in the public health department of the Ministry of Health noted that 14 people were killed in a traffic accident in Kyrgyzstan per 100 road accidents with injuries in 2018. This figure was 19 with fatal injuries per 100 road accidents with injuries among children.
"32 thousand traffic accidents were officially registered, in which about 6 thousand people died over the past 5 years. According to data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 5 thousand traffic accidents occurred in 2018, of which 1.4 thousand were registered with the participation of children. 716 people died, of whom 87 were children," he said.
Buteshov noted that special attention should be paid to pedestrians, because in Kyrgyzstan 40% of fatal accidents occur on pedestrians.
