AKIPRESS.COM - Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Chingiz Aidarbekov met with Vladimir Voronkov, Under UN Deputy Secretary General, and Natalia Gherman, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Central Asia, in Dushanbe on May 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
They discussed cooperation in countering terrorism and extremism. Aidarbekov stressed the interest of the Government of Kyrgyzstan in attracting international expert and financial and technical assistance necessary to implement phase III of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, as well as the Government program to counter extremism and terrorism in 2017-2022.
The same day, Aidarbekov took part in the conference on international and regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism and its financing through illegal drug trafficking and organized crime in Dushanbe. The event, organized by the Government of Tajikistan with the support of the UN, the EU and the OSCE, was opened by President Emomali Rahmon. Welcoming remarks were also made by the UN Under Deputy Secretary General, the head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov.
Aidarbekov told the Conference about the measures taken in Kyrgyzstan to counter terrorism, illegal drug trafficking and religious extremism. He also called on the international community to consolidate their efforts to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, aimed to strengthen national, regional and international efforts in the fight against terrorism. Following the results of the international conference, high-level representatives of the OSCE and UN member states, as well as heads of international and regional organizations, adopted a final declaration.
On the sidelines of the conference, Aidarbekov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddim. They exchanged views on topical issues of bilateral cooperation, including the delimitation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border, as well as interaction within regional and international organizations. They also discussed planned international events with the participation of the heads of state and foreign ministries of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan this year in Bishkek. They expressed readiness to actively promote bilateral relations to strengthen friendship and good neighborliness between the two fraternal peoples.
Additionally, Aidarbekov met with Pedro Serrano, the Deputy Secretary General for Common Security and Defence Policy and Crisis Response at the European External Action Service. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the preparation of a new EU Strategy for Central Asia, the adoption of which is planned for the current year. They discussed issues of security cooperation, countering joint challenges and threats.
