Bishkek, May 20, 2019. / Kabar /. The number of children in boarding schools and orphanages in Kyrgyzstan is more than 12 thousand, director of "Child Rights Defenders League" public fund Nazgul Turdubekova told at Kabar Agency.
She told about the trip of a delegation from Kyrgyzstan to the Republic of Moldova to study the Moldovan experience on reforming residential institutions for children through the development of social services for children in difficult life situations.
Turdubekova said that these social services are provided at the local, district and republican levels by creating measures to preserve the child in the family environment and introduce inclusive education.
Turdubekova said that this visit is one of the activities of the Work Plan of the Expert Working Group on reforming the residential-type child care system under the President’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic at the initiative of the head of state to protect the children's rights and to strengthen the optimization plan for children's institutions.
"As part of the work of this group, an analysis was made of the current system of boarding schools and the development of recommendations for the government on its reform. As a result of the analysis, it was found that from 2012 to 2018, the number of children in boarding schools and orphanages has greatly increased. If in 2012 the number of children was 10 thousand 908, then in 2018 this figure was already 12 thousand 2 children. Of these, only 5% of children are orphans. All other children are half orphans," she said.
