Bishkek, May 23, 2019. /Kabar/. President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov said that the solution to the problem of providing the population with clean drinking water is directly related to the health of citizens.
Speaking at the Forum "Clean Water for the Regions" today, May 23 the head of state announced that about 30 thousand cases of open intestinal diseases are registered in the country every year.
"More than 4.8 billion soms are spent annually in the country to combat diseases that can be infected through drinking water. If we could solve the problem of providing clean water to human settlements, we could avoid these consequences," the President said.
Sooronbay Jeenbekov said that these funds could be used to develop the infrastructure of cities and villages, which would further affect the development of the economy and tourism.
The Forum "Clean Water for the Regions" is held today in Bishkek. Summa Chakrabarti, the Head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), heads of ministries and agencies, local governments, directors of municipal water supply companies, and representatives of the donor community attended the forum.
Two agreements between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and EBRD on improvement of water supply systems are expected to be signed during the discussion:
- Agreement on Rehabilitation of Water Supply Systems in Myrza-Ake, Kurshab and Don-Bulak Local Governments (Osh Oblast);
- Agreement on improvement of water supply system in Jalal-Abad town.
The total amount of investments of the two projects exceeds EUR 15 million
