Bishkek, May 22, 2019. / Kabar/. On 23 May 2019, ADB and students from the N. Isanov Kyrgyz State University of Construction, Transport and Architecture (KSUCTA) presented the results and recommendations from an ADB study to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in Bishkek. Eight KSUCTA students assisted ADB experts to prepare the study byconducting traffic surveys at selected congested intersections in Bishkek and, with training and guidance from ADB experts,used VISTRO traffic simulation software to simulate traffic conditions in a congested area of Bishkek totest and develop recommendations to improve traffic conditions.
ADB notedthat Bishkek is one of the most green and walkable cities in the region. To maintain and improve its urban environment, ADB recommended that Bishkek: (i) introduce a modern parking policy and management; (ii) expand public transport service with electric buses and integrate bus and mini bus operation; (iii) developmore bike lanes and a bike sharing system; and (iv) introducean advanced traffic signal control system andmodern traffic management. ADB emphasized that many solutions do not require heavy infrastructure but can maximize the advantages that the city already has such as green and walkable areas, a well-planned road network and high share of clean and renewable energy. ADB is pleased to continueproviding technical support to the government for improving the sustainability of urban transport in Bishkek and other cities in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Ms. Candice McDeigan, Country Director, ADB Kyrgyz Republic Resident Mission (KYRM), Mr. Steven Lewis-Workman, KYRM Unit Head, Project Administration, Mr. Ki-Joon Kim, ADB Principal Transport Specialist, Mr. MirdinEshenaliev, KYRM Senior Project Specialist, led a lively discussion of the findings. Mr. AkymbekAbdykalykov, Rector of KSUCTA, moderated the event.
The event was attended by over 100 students and faculty of KSUCT, Mr. BakytBerdaliev, Deputy Minister of Transport and Roads of the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Kuban Djusupov, Head of Transport Department of the Bishkek Municipal Government, representatives from the Traffic Police office and others.
Since joining ADB in 1994, the Kyrgyz Republic has received over $1.9 billion in sovereign and private sector loans and grants from ADB in education, finance, transport, water, and energy.ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. In 2018, it made commitments of new loans and grants amounting to $21.6 billion. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.
