Bishkek, June 4, 2019. /Kabar/. Within the framework of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture the 26 days against torture information campaign has started in Kyrgyzstan, Director of the National Centre for Prevention of Torture Nurdin Sulaymanov told.
The event is timed to the 7th anniversary of the Centre's activities, the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Torture and the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
The event is financially supported by the Penal Reform International Central Asia office. The Ombudsman's Office, the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights are co-organizers of the event.
Thus, the National Centre plans to conduct on June 3 - 21 a number of preventive visits to closed institutions together with representatives of the Kyrgyz Parliament, in order to check the conditions of detention.
"As part of the campaign, a conference on the topic "Systemic Causes and Consequences of Torture" will be held in Bishkek on June 26 with the participation of heads of ministries and law enforcement agencies. The round table will include a review of the recommendations of the National Centre for the Prevention of Torture of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2014-2016 and the problems of their implementation. On June 17-24 some universities of the capital will hold photo exhibitions of victims of torture and places of detention and restriction of liberty, and a debate tournament among students is also planned. A number of events to mark these dates will also be held in the territorial offices of the National Centre," the director said.
