Bishkek, June 24, 2019. /Kabar/. In 2015 torture was recorded in 122 countries, Jarkynai Usupova, the Deputy Director of the Representative Office of Penal Reform International (PRI) in Central Asia told during the press conference at Kabar News Agency.
She said that PRI determines that torture is what destroys the human body and mind, not only the victim suffers, but also his or her surroundings - family, friends.
"In 2015, torture was recorded in 122 countries around the world, and over the past 10 years it has been equated with terrorism. 60 % of all countries still use torture. They have many forms of torture: beating, suffocation, electric shocks, pulling teeth, nails, fingers, wounds with weapons, knives, etc., including sexual violence," the deputy director said.
Jusupova also noted the consequences of torture were equally horrific. Nightly insomnia, nightmares, stress, depression are just a small part of what the victim feels.
Penal Reform International (commonly known as PRI) was founded in London in 1989. It is an international nongovernmental organization working on penal and criminal justice reform worldwide.
