Bishkek, June 27, 2019. /Kabar/. A two-day (June 26-27) regional workshop on strengthening national, sub-regional and international capacities to prepare for and respond to deliberate use of biological weapons is taking place in Issyk-Kul Oblast, the press service of the Ministry of Economy of Kyrgyzstan reported.
The event is attended by representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Belarus and international organizations.
The objectives of the workshop are to share experiences, establish interagency collaboration at the national and regional levels, discuss response mechanisms and obtain up-to-date information on regional and international cooperation opportunities for strengthen preparedness.
During the workshop, the participants noted that prevention of and response to biological security threats require close multilateral cooperation, strengthening of mechanisms to develop regional and international cooperation to assist any participant of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in emergency situations involving threats to the use of biological weapons.
The workshop is organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) Implementation Support Unit of the BWC in cooperation with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Program Office in Bishkek.
In 2004 the Kyrgyz Republic acceded to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction, signed on Apr.10, 1972 in Moscow, London and Washington (BWC).
