Iran, Tajikistan to spend $8 million more to complete construction of Istiqlol tunnel

AKIPRESS.COM - Iran and Tajikistan agreed to invest $8 million in construction of Istiqlol tunnel. Minister of Transport of Tajikistan Hudoyor Hudoyorov and Ministr of Energy of Iran Rizo Ardakonien agreed that each side will finance $4 million to finish construction of the tunnel.
These funds will be used for construction of ventilation and automatic sprinkler systems, traffic and safety control systems, Radio Ozodi reports.
The Istiqlol tunnel links the southern parts of Tajikistan with its northern Sughd region. Iran has spent more than $60 million for construction, which took 3 years. In 2006, the tunnel was commissioned by two leaders. The tunnel remains unsafe since it does not have lighting, ventilation systems.
