Jailed politician attends funeral of mother-in-law

AKIPRESS.COM - The funeral of the mother-in-law of former MP Omurbek Tekebayev is taking place in the village of Vorontsovka on July 6. Bubukan Turduyeva died at the age of 77.
Tekebayev was allowed to attend the funeral and arrived there accompanied with police escort.
Ata Meken MPs also attended the funeral.
On 25 February 2017, the General Prosecutor's Office launched criminal probe against Tekebayev on corruption and fraud charges. The probe was launched on the basis of the statement made by Russian businessman Leonid Mayevsky, who alleged that he gave $1 million to Tekebayev to secure a stake in the mobile operator Alfa Telecom. Tekebayev was arrested in airport upon arrival from Europe.
In August 2017, Tekebayev was found guilty and sentenced to 8 years in prison and confiscation of property. The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court.
