Check reveals foreign workers in oil and gas industry in Kazakhstan earn 5 times more than locals — trade union

AKIPRESS.COM - After a mass brawl in Tengiz oil field in Kazakhstan, more than 17,000 large foreign companies fell under raid, AstanaTV reports. One of the demands of the protesters then was wage discrimination. According to the trade union of Atyrau region, a difference in wages in the oil and gas industry between local and foreign workers was very high. Foreign employees get 5 times more than the local ones.
According to attorney Ruslan Kozhahmet, wage and position are established in accordance with the skill of a worker, however, due to the absence of a mechanism of nostrification, to ensure the authenticity of documents of foreign citizens is impossible.
A conflict in Tengiz oil field raised the issues of local labor inspection.
After the raid in Consolidated Contracting Engineering & Procurement S.A.L Offshore (CCEP), 2 employees were sacked on the basis of a mass petition. Local inspectors said these workers positions did not match with the position that was documented in the company.
Atyrau regional trade union members confirmed that the salaries of local workers are lower than those of foreigners. This is a violation of workers rights, they said.
A number of protesters is increasing in the country. The issue of discrimination of wage have been raised since January 2018 in the Mazhilis.
Ambassadors of lebanon and Jordan came to Atyrau region recently. Authorities of Kazakhstan and businessmen demanded no conflicts should occur next time. They offered to increase a number of Kazakhstanis in the mangement team and carry out an explanatory works among the staff.
