Famous Korean director intends to make film based on Aitmatov’s novel

Bishkek, July 12, 2019 / Kabar /. Famous Korean director Kim Ki-Duk arrived in Bishkek on July 9 on his own initiative, the press service of the Department of Cinematography reported.
On July 11, he visited the House of Cinema named after Aitmatov and met with Muktali Bektenaliev, the Director of the Department of Cinematography.
Bektenaliev said that Bishkek residents are well acquainted with the work of Kim Ki-Duk, colleagues and fans want to meet him, journalists ask to arrange an interview.
Kim Ki-Duksaid that he arrived in Bishkek to meet with fellow filmmakers, get acquainted with the state of the film process in Kyrgyzstan and talk about his current creative and production affairs.
Kim Ki-Duk also told that once at a film festival in Russia, he met Turkmen director Khojakuli Narliev and saw his film Mankurt (Bird Memory). He was shocked by the picture and image of mankurt and was impressed for a long time. Kim Ki-Duk learned that the legend of mancourt is one of the parts of Chingiz Aitmatov's novel "A Day Lasts for More than a Century".
"The subject of mankurtism shook me so much that I decided to write a script in which I would interpret all the acute problems of the modern world in my own way, for example: loss of moral guidelines, leveling of cultural values, historical oblivion," he said.
Kim Ki-Duk noted that perhaps in the future he will make a film in Kyrgyzstan.
Muktali Bektenaliyev replied that the Kyrgyz side will assist in his work.
Kim Ki-Duk was born in 1960. He studied painting in Paris. In 1996 he made his debut in directing the film "Crocodile". Currently he is the most famous Korean director, whose works invariably arouse great interest among both viewers and critics.
