Bishkek, July 16, 2019. /Kabar/. The Kyrgyz Republic has joined the international Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPSC). Prime Minister Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev has signed the relevant decision, the Government’s press service reported.
This decision was made in order to implement the Regulations on the import into the customs territory of the Eurasian Economic Union and export from the customs territory of the Eurasian Economic Union of gems.
Based on this, and in accordance with Article 9 of the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic "On precious metals and gems", it was decided to express consent to the accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the international KPSC and, at the same time, to approve the Rules for the import into and export from the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic of rough diamonds, taking into account the international KPSC according to the Annex.
The Kimberley Process (KP) is a commitment to remove conflict diamonds from the global supply chain. Today, participants actively prevent 99.8% of the worldwide trade.
The KP is a multilateral trade regime established in 2003 with the goal of preventing the flow of conflict diamonds. The core of this regime is the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) under which States implement safeguards on shipments of rough diamonds and certify them as "conflict free".
The process was set up "to ensure that diamond purchases were not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies seeking to undermine legitimate governments.
