AKIPRESS.COM - A four-day study visit to Copenhagen and Malmo organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan in co-operation with the Nordic Council of Ministers concluded on 5 September. Representatives of the municipality of Tashkent responsible for urban and mobility planning and members of the Cycling Federation of Uzbekistan had a chance to learn best practices of sustainable city mobility planning. The visit covered topics such as the creation of liveable spaces, sustainable mobility and sustainable urban planning and construction projects. In particular, the participants were familiarized with the Danish and Swedish cities' experiences in reducing city commutes by car in favour of public transport and bicycles. Copenhagen is an inspiration for many cities around the world as 49% of all commutes in the city are done by bicycles.
The participants learned from the cities of Copenhagen and Malmo how to consider sustainability while designing urban strategies and integrate sustainable urban mobility into policy development processes. Meetings were held with the administrations of Copenhagen, Malmo and Roskilde, public transportation companies, the Danish Cycling Federation and the Cycle Superhighways Office. These meetings were complemented by visits to urban areas that were planned as sustainable and liveable. A filming crew of the national television channel of Uzbekistan that is preparing the first documentary of a series on green economy accompanied the participants.
The visit is part of a longstanding commitment of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan to assist the country in promoting Green Economy policies.
