Kazakhstanis fighting in Tajik-Afghan border conflict to get status of veterans

AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakhstanis participating in Tajik-Afghan border conflicts will be assigned the status of veterans, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstanis told Ak Zhol party members, Informburo reported. Member of the Mazhilis Berik Dyusembinov on September 23 appealed to Prime Minister Askar Mamin with the request to consider the issue of providing veteran status to participants of the Tajik-Afghan conflict.
According to the parliamentarian, about 10,000 Kazakh soldiers took part in the protection of the Tajik-Afghan border during the period from 1992 to 2001.
Dyusembinov told about the event happened on April 7, 1995 in the Pshihavr Gorge, where 17 servicemen of the South-Kazakhstan regiment were killed and 33 wounded.
The parliamentarian claimed that the participants of the event did not receive any official status until today and urges to appreciate their heroism.
The working group created by the Armed Forces said that the draft law on resolution of this issue is being raised by veteran organizations.
