About 30,000 people live in landslide-prone areas in Kyrgyzstan

AKIPRESS.COM - About 30,000 people live in landslide-prone zones located at about 600 settlements in Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported during a seminar on preparation of the project on managing landslide risks in the country. The event was attended by representatives of the ministries, agencies, the Academy of Science and international organizations.
At a moment, 4,555 landslides, including 4,446 (98%) in Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions, are recorded on the territory of the country. About 15,000 cubic meters of the territory of Kyrgyzstan are under potential threat of such landslides.
The participants of the seminar shared information about the current situation concerning landslides in Kyrgyzstan. They discussed the goals of the project on improving management of landslide processes and development of insurance in the country.
The International Centre for Environmental Management experts on October 11-12 visited the landslide-prone areas in Osh and Jalal-Abad regions and met with the population of Uzgen and Suzak districts living in these zones.
