Anti-uranium bill passes third reading at Kyrgyzstan parliament

AKIPRESS.COM - Draft law banning geological exploration and mining of uranium and thorium deposits in Kyrgyzstan passed the third reading at the parliament on October 31.
The bill refers to activities of individuals, legal entities and types of subsoil use in the uranium and thorium deposits in Kyrgyzstan.
The bill proposes to ban any geological exploration and mining of uranium and thorium deposits, as well as development of radioactive tailings and waste dumps, as well as their transfer to individuals for further development and maintenance.
The draft law also proposes to ban import of uranium- and thorium-containing raw materials and waste.
The law does not apply to issues related to the reclamation of tailing dumps, storage and disposal of waste, which are regulated by the law on tailings and waste dumps, the law on radiation safety of the population of Kyrgyzstan.
