AKIPRESS.COM - One of the streets in the village of Rakhmanjan in Nooken district of Jalal-Abad region was named after ousted president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. The decision to name the street after Bakiyev was made by members of the local council.
Jalal-Abad region governor Kiyanbek Satybaldiyev said the decision was taken illegally and therefore, it will be cancelled. The district and region authorities were not informed about it. Responsibility of the persons who allowed this illegal action will be considered, he said.
The street sign with Bakiyev's name was dismantled. The street is home to 18 households. The initiative to name the street after the ousted president was taken by local residents in August.
Bakiyev is accused of power abuse and was sentenced in absentia to 24 years in prison after April 2010 deadly uprising in Kyrgyzstan. On April 7-8, 2010, troops loyal to Bakiyev shot into crowds of protesters killing hundreds.
