AKIPRESS.COM - The State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry of Kyrgyzstan plans to restore the population of the goitered gazelle, Director of the Agency Mirslav Amankulov told AKIpress on November 14.
Amankulov has recently visited the northern shore of the Issyk-Kul Lake and south-western part of the Orto-Tokoy water reservoir to check the territories. The Agency plans to release some 50 heads of goitered gazelles here for restoration of their population.
"This place suits for inhabiting and breeding of the goitered gazelles. There is the Orto-Tokoy water reservoir not far from here. In addition, goitered gazelles used to inhabit here in the 1930-70s," Amankulov noted.
The peculiarity of the goitered gazelles is that they can drink very salty water and live without water for a long time.
To date, the goitered gazelles are in the list of endangered animals in Kyrgyzstan. One faces a 1 million som fine for illegal shot of this animal.
Some 50 heads of goitered gazelles will be handed over by the Kazakh side. The sides signed a an agreement on handover of the gazelles to the Kyrgyz side for free of charge for restoration of the population on the territory of the Issyk-Kul Lake and the Orto-Tokoy water reservoir.
