AKIPRESS.COM - The Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan jointly with the Kazakhstan Bird Conservation Union chose the saker falcon as a symbol of the next year, the association reported.
Among other nominees were black vulture and flamingo. The saker falcon was elected by majority of the employees as a result, the statement says.
The saker falcon is a rare bird of prey in the Falconidae. According to the Association, they can be seen across the country and winter in the Altai and Tian-Shan foothills.
A number of saker falcons in Kazakhstan started reducing rapidly since the mid 1990 due to the poaching. The saker falcon is used in a traditional hunting. Now the statistics shows that a nimber of these birds in the country is only several hundreds.
In 2015, the Association added the saker falcon in the endangered list.
