Education in Latin suspended in Kazakh schools after criticism of alphabet

AKIPRESS.COM - Education in Latin scrip in schools of Kazakhstan will not start unless the new alphabet is finished and approved, Minister of Education and Science Askhat Aimagambetov said, Sputnik Kazakhstan reported.
"De facto and de jure today we have an order of President, who said that it should be completed. Now it's not time to say that in 2020 we will begin education in Latin in schools, because it is a long process. First we should confirm and then there will be rules and a pilot. After, the relevant preparations will start and only after this a study guide will appear," the Minister said at the session of the Senate.
According to him, the country next year will switch over to the 12-year education. A study guide, teachers and programs should be prepared first, he noted.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev failed all three varianst of the Kazakh alphabet in Latin script. He said the country should start considering the Latin, scientific approach and decide this issue by 2025.
