Every second child in Kyrgyzstan subjected to physical punishment – report

AKIPRESS.COM - 2018 saw 136 cases of cruel treatment of minors. In 74 cases, criminal probes were launched, 49 criminal cases were forwarded to courts, 99 protection orders were issued, according to the periodical fifth report on implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by Kyrgyzstan from 2014 to 2019. The module on reduction of violence against children at schools of Kyrgyzstan was developed with UNESCO Cluster Bureau support. 1,859 boards were set up at schools of the country to prevent violence. The boards included teachers, police youth liaison officers, parents, high school students.
According to the findings of the cluster survey carried out in 2018 in Kyrgyzstan, non-violent discipline options are used only for 23% of children.
47.5% of children, which is almost every second child in Kyrgyzstan, are subjected to physical punishment.
5.4% of children are subjected to harsh physical punishment.
70% of children, that is almost 3 of 4 children, were exposed to psychological pressure.
- 74.3%, three of four children, were subject to any violent discipline methods.
"A share of children subjected to violent forms of punishment is growing with the age. The share of mothers believing physical punishment is necessary made 8.9%, the percentage of children that were punished physically made 52.9%," the report said.
