AKIPRESS.COM - For the first time ever, the convicts took part in the parliamentary and local elections of Uzbekistan on 22 December. Interior Minister of Uzbekistan Pulat Babajanov said at a press conference in Tashkent that in total of 3,619 people were included in the voter list, including 1,344 serving sentences in penal colonies and 2,275 in remand prisons.
25 polling stations have been set up for this purpose. 6 international observers were involved in monitoring the voting of prisoners.
The voting in places of detention and imprisonment was held for the first time in Uzbekistan in accordance with the new Electoral Code. The relevant law introducing amendments and additions to some legislative acts of Uzbekistan in connection with the improvement of election legislation was signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The right to vote in the elections was granted only to citizens who did not pose a great danger and committed less serious crimes.
