Tokayev: Kazakhstan is a water deficiency nation

AKIPRESS.COM - President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev commented on water issues in Kazakhstan.
He said Kazakhstan is a water deficiency nation, and the country needs to approach to this matter very seriously, the tasks are set for the Environmental Ministry and government as a whole.
"We need to introduce new approaches, new water-saving technologies. We need to gradually get rid of industries that require a large water supply," he said.
"We need to raise issues of rational use of water from transboundary rivers with neighboring states through diplomatic channels. This is a sophisticated matter linked to desires of states to use more water in their own interests, especially those nations actively working on industrialization. Geography we are situated in that way that all transboundary rivers flow to Kazakhstan. The upper reaches of the rivers are in neighboring states, while the lower reaches are in here. We must proceed from geography and negotiate accordingly," Tokayev added.
