16 miners in Samarkand region steal almost 10 kg of gold bearing ore

AKIPRESS.COM - Samarkand region's Kattagurgan district court handed down lengthy prison terms to 16 workers of the Karakutan gold mine of the Navoi mining factory. They were found guilty of theft of gold bearing ore, the Investigation Department of Uzbekistan said. The investigation established that in June 2019, a 38-year-old worker of the Karakutan mine colluded with 5 other mine workers to steal the gold bearing ore.
The group unlawfully mined gold bearing ore from June 13-17 and after the end of the last shift hid the sacks with the ore at the entrance to the mine. Then 9,930 kg of ore bearing 1,176.96 gram of gold and 1,210.52 g of silver valued at around $46,000 were transported in a truck.
Two men were detained on June 18 by police officers while they transported 5,540 kg of ore.
One of the men was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months, another to 8 years in prison. Other men were handed down similar prison sentences.
