AKIPRESS.COM - Kyrgyzstan is decisively fighting against corruption, making reforms in judicial and law enforcement systems, President Sooronbai Jeenbekov said in his address in connection with the anniversary of the Aksy events of 2002.
"The Aksy events of March 17, 2002 remain as a turning point in democratic development of Kyrgyzstan. This is the beginning of our people's fight against injustice and served as important prerequisite of the March and April revolutions.
Today the government is doing best to justify the trust of people who, putting their own lives at risk, took to streets for the future of the country," the President said.
The government is doing a lot of work to provide security, digitalization and development of the economy, the statement adds.
The President expressed condolences and gratitude to heroes of the Aksy events, who received injuries.
On 17 March 2002, a demonstration in support of a jailed politician in Aksy town turned violent and police killed at least five protesters. The incident sparked widespread protests across Kyrgyzstan and eventually led to the downfall of then-Prime Minister Kurmanbek Bakiyev's government.
