AKIPRESS.COM - Mayor of Dushanbe Rustam Emomali, son of President Emomali Rahmon, was elected the member of the upper chamber (Senate) of the Tajik palriament.
His nomination was unanimously supported today at the first joint session of the city and district local councils, Asia-Plus reported.
Rustam Emomali was elected member of the city council in April 2017.
Other elected members of the upper chamber of the Tajik parliament included Tajik Technical University Rector Ilhom Amonzoda, Tajik Medical University Rector Makhmadsho Gulzoda, Law Faculty Dean Dilshod Rahmon, Dushanbe education department chief Lola Odilbekova.
25 members of the upper chamber of the Tajik parliament are elected by local councilors (5 members from Gorno-Badakhshan, Sughd, Khatlon regions, Dushanbe and districts each). 8 members are appointed by the Tajik President. Ex-Presidents of Tajikistan may become lifelong members of the upper chamber of the Tajik parliament if they wish.
Most Tajik political experts expect Rustam Emomali to be elected as speaker of the upper chamber of the Tajik parliament, which means he may become the second person in the country after the President de-facto.
