AKIPRESS.COM - The eldest son of the President of Tajikistan, Rustam Emomali, has been elected Speaker of the upper chamber of the Tajik Parliament.
He was elected at the first session of the upper chamber of the sixth convocation held today in Dushanbe in presence of President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
Dushanbe mayor Rustam Emomali was elected a Dushanbe local council member in March 2020. At the first session of the city and the district councils, Rustam Emomali was elected the member of the upper chamber of the Tajik Parliament.
The upper chamber (Senate) of the Tajik Parliament consists of 33 members. 25 members are elected by local councils at region, district and town levels. Eight members are appointed by the President. Ex-Presidents of Tajikistan may become lifelong members of the upper chamber of the Tajik parliament when they wish.
The upper chamber mainly approves the legislative acts passed by the lower chamber of the Tajik Parliament, approves nominees for Prosecutor General, judges of the Constitutional, Supreme and Supreme Economic Courts.
According to the article 71 of the Constitution of Tajikistan, in case of resignation, incapacitation or death of the President of the country, the Speaker of the upper chamber will perform presidential duties until President-elect assumes office. In such case presidential elections are held within 3 months.
Rustam Emomali was appointed Dushanbe mayor in January 2017. Before that appointment he headed the Public Finance Control and Anti-Corruption Agency. He is the youngest General in the CIS region.
Born in 1987, Rustam Emomali graduated from the Tajik National University, majoring in international economic relations. He attended courses at the Diplomatic Academy under the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He served in the Investment and Public Property Committee. Rustam Emomali is one of founders and co-owners of the Istiklol Football Club, President of the Football Federation of Tajikistan.
