AKIPRESS.COM - Usmanzhan Artikov from Osh has been making tandoorovens [cylindrical clay oven for baking bread and pies] for 20 years. He has learned this art from his father's relatives. Now the master is teaching his sons. "You have to work hard to make an oven. The ovens are hand made and as such are valued. We use a special red clay for making ovens. We bring it from Aravan district. One truck of clay will suffice for making 15-20 ovens," the master says.
"One tandoor is made for a week. My sons are doing ovens better than me now," he said.
The master has clients in Russia. "The tandoor ovens are taken to Russia in trucks. They are used by our expatriates who run cafes and restaurants there," he said.
"If installed properly, the oven will work for many years," the master said.
During self-isolation period, the demand for the tandoor ovens has grown.
"There were many orders during quarantine. People were staying at home and needed to bake bread. They took 5-6 clay ovens from one village a day," the master said.
"Our work stops in cold season. We sell the ovens we have made in warm time," the master said.
