AKIPRESS.COM - Despite the mechanisms of fight against domestic violence are in place, there are many cases of domestic violence remaining unknown, MP Ainura Askarova said in Parliament today during consideration of the amendments to several legislative acts tightening punishment for domestic violence. In many cases abusers are not held accountable due to pressure exerted by relatives, the MP said.
"There is information that the local authorities intervened into the case of the woman's torture by her husband in Suzak. The rural municipality vice governor, who appeared to be this woman's relative, exerted psychological pressure. The situation is difficult in rural areas, where women and children depend financially on their husbands and fathers. How can we prevent intervention of third parties? We all know well that relatives often interfere," MP Askarova said.
The author of the draft law, MP Iskhak Pirmatov, said following the incident in Suzak, the court had to rule 15-day arrest for the abuser since the situation caused public outcry, but the effective regulations foresee 48 hours of arrest in such cases.
"For this reason, the proposed bill suggests that the abuser will be held in custody for the period of investigation. Neither local administrations, nor relatives will be able to do anything. The abuser will be just arrested so that nobody will interfere," MP Pirmatov said.
