AKIPRESS.COM - Tajikistan introduces restrictions for electricity consumption, according to the resolution published on the government's website. The increased effects of climate change and warming affected Tajikistan this year. According to Tajik authorities, just 50% of snow norm fell in the basin of Bakhsh and Pyanzh rivers in autumn-winter 2019-2020.
"Such situation has happened in Tajikistan for the first time. Today the water level in the Pyanzh river is for 2,000 cbm lower than in previous years, the water level in the Vakhsh river is for 800 cbm less, that is by 50%. Such water level is a sign of small amount of snow in the mountains. The water level in the Nurek dam is for 17 meters lower than in the previous year. If situation does not improve, water level will keep falling in the dam and serious problems with electricity supply will arise in winter," the Tajik government said.
"We may prevent problems in autumn and winter using electricity reasonably now. For this reason, the government asks people to treat restrictions imposed by tte Tajik energy holding Barki Tochik with understanding: we need to save water in the Nurek dam," the government said.
The government said the export of electicity to Uzbekistan and Afghanistan was halted earlier than planned.
"This is the only way now to avoid problems in winter. Each citizen, family, all organizations, companies and enterprises should use electricity sparingly," the government said.
