AKIPRESS.COM - WHO Regional Office for Europe, supported by WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan, delivered to the Republic of Uzbekistan another batch of humanitarian supplies worth about $300,000 procured by WHO HQ via the global COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. This time the flight from Istanbul brought 500 oxygen concentrators. Another shipment of laboratory consumables is expected to arrive at the end of the week, WHO said. "Since the beginning of the pandemic, the WHO Country Office jointly with the UN partner agencies in Uzbekistan has been working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Service for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health. The delivery of essential equipment and protective gear is part of assistance rendered to the country. WHO also focuses on professional development of doctors, nurses and other health care workers, training of laboratory personnel, assistance to development of treatment protocols using international experience, and free access to up-to-date international information on coronavirus infection," explains Dr Lianne Kuppens, WHO Representative in Uzbekistan.
WHO regularly delivers humanitarian supplies to Tashkent. In July, the country received 3 cargoes worth over $4 million. The first shipment arrived on July 8 and included 619,400 face shields and 2,176,000 surgical masks. On July 17, personal protective equipment for health care workers was received: 95,200 goggles, 178,000 gowns, 12,000 medical masks, and 1,064,000 KN95 respirators. On July 24, the capital of Uzbekistan received 38,400 test kits and other laboratory equipment.
The equipment and protective gear were donated to the Ministry of Health and the Service for Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health.
