AKIPRESS.COM - Kyrgyzstan has favorable natural conditions and climate for the development of winter tourism, according to the winter tourism development concept of Kyrgyzstan for 2021-2025 developed by the Department of Tourism.
Around 40% of the territory is mountainous at the height of more than 3000 meters, which is good for steady snow cover and development of mountain winter tourism.
Territory of the Kyrgyz Republic is larger than the territory of traditional winter tourism spots like Switzerland by almost 5 times and Austria by 2.5 times, the concept reads.
Some mountain ranges are located at an altitude of 4000 meters and above with the snow cover all year round, which allows those places to become potential places for the development of winter tourism.
Ski and tourist bases were built in Kyrgyzstan during the Soviet times and mainly around the city of Bishkek: Orusi, ZIL, Chon-Tash, Kashka-Suu ski bases.
Kyrgyzstan had the only year-round Ala-Archa camp in the country, which is characterized by unique terrain conditions that provide avalanche safety for most routes and approaches.
Transition to market relations changed the direction of winter tourism objects from recreational to commercial. But despite this, winter tourism and recreation continue to be sources of healthy lifestyle for the population, the concept reads.
