Uzbekistan to start cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes

AKIPRESS.COM - The Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan and Malta's Melabis signed a memorandum of cooperation on cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes.
Cultiviation of industrial cannabis on 3,000 ha is planned in Sardoba district of Syrdarya region, UzA reported.
Cultivation of cannabis is planned on 500 ha in the first year of the project. The cultivated fields are supposed to be extended to 3,000 ha in the next 3 years.
The climate in Central Asia is favorable for cannabis cultivation. It consumes water 10 times less than cotton.
$33 million will be invested into the project at the initial stage. This would also require construction of hi-tech plant in Syrdarya region and laboratories for processing of raw cannabis. This would lead to create of 100 new work places.
The ready product will be mainly exported.
