AKIPRESS.COM - 18 persons suspected of involvement in illegal organ trafficking have been detained in Istanbul, Turkey, Anadolu newspaper reports.
Turkish Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons has launched an investigation into the suspicious cases of 18 foreigners who applied to the ethics committee and claimed themselves as relatives of persons in need of organ transplant.
Investigation revealed that the suspects who claimed themselves as relatives of patients in need of organ transplants were not related to those persons and wanted to sell organs.
18 foreigners, including citizens of Nigeria, Uganda, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, were detained.
After interrogation, 8 people were released and 10 were brought to trial. 5 were arrested, and 5 others were imposed travel ban.
