Worker remittances to Tajikistan 9% down - National Bank

AKIPRESS.COM - The National Bank of Tajikistan said worker remittances dropped 9% due to COVID-19 pandemic and closure of borders.
Some economists suggested the real figure is much higher.
Former Chairman of the National Bank Jamshed Nurmahmadzoda said in July migrants remitted $195 million for 6 months and compared to the same period of the previous year remittances dropped 14.8%. He said then migrant workers sent $999 million to Tajikistan.
Tajikistan is remittances dependent economy. According to official statistics, migrants sent around $2.7 billion in 2019, this is 6.6% higher than in the previous year.
The Central Bank of Russia reported some $1.224 billion was transmitted to Tajikistan in 9 months of this year, this is 37% less year-on-year.
