Kyrgyz national currency marks 28th anniversary

On May 3, 1993 by the decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz Republic it was decided to introduce the national currency, and on May 10 of the same year the som became the official currency throughout the country.
"The decision to introduce its own currency became a key for the young republic to a new stage of economic development," it said.
After 28 years, the Kyrgyz som has become not only the main instrument of independent monetary policy, but also an inalienable symbol of independence of the sovereign state.
Today the som is one of the most stable currencies in the former Soviet Union despite periodic shocks in the economy, political events and crises in the world, the NBKR said.
