Uzbekistan requires from Facebook, TikTok, Telegram to install equipment on its territory

AKIPRESS.COM - Facebook, TikTok, Telegram and similar communication platforms should move their equipment to the territory of Uzbekistan to operate legally. Otherwise, they will face administrative and criminal sanctions, the Parliament of Uzbekistan said. The Innovative Development, Information Policy and Information Technologies Committee of the Parliament of Uzbekistan held the meeting on check of compliance with the Law on Personal Information.
The State Personalization Center under the government of Uzbekistan provided a report on its work. According to the Law on Personal Information, Facebook Inc. (Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp), Google (Google Messenger, YouTube), Mail.ru (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki), Microsoft Skype, Telegram, Tencent Wechat, TikTok, Twitter, Yandex (Yandex.taxi, Yandex.maps, Yandex.messenger, Yandex.money) should collect, systematize and store personal information of citizens of Uzbekistan on equipment and databases stationed on the territory of the country.
This means if platforms and Internet companies want to legally operate in Uzbekistan, they should install equipment on the territory of Uzbekistan or will face administrative or criminal sanctions.
The above mentioned companies were sent notifications with the requirement to comply with the national legislation.
"The above mentioned social networks and Internet companies came under cyber attacks for the last several years. Personal information of millions, Uzbek citizens among them, is stolen. The risk of obtaining passport information of citizens is growing. This information can be abused in socio-political and economic interests," the Uzbek Parliament's press service said.
