AKIPRESS.COM - Dozens of workers of Indorama Agro LLC went for a bike ride on Jizzakh-Gulistan highway in Sardoba district of Syrdarya region in protest against wage cuts and violations of labor legislation on May 20.
The video of dozens of cyclists on the highway obstructing traffic was spead across social media.
Protesting workers said they can't survive on their $140 pay.
According to local media reports, local authorities said they won't interfere into the matter between the foreign company and its workers.
Indorama Agro LLC, a local subsidiary of Singapore-based Indorama, began operations in Akaltyn and Sardoba districts of Syrdarya region last year.
The Uzbek government provided 24,000 ha of land for cotton growing project of Indorama Agro LLC.
According to the conclusion of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the $70 million worth project is aimed to introduce efficient methods of cotton cultivation, to increase labor productivity and wages in agriculture.
Massive layoff was reported at the enterprise earlier this year. Workers of Indorama Agro LLC then complained about violation of labor legislation by the company management, claiming farmers "are exploited" in severe winter frosts and hot summer days.
