AKIPRESS.COM - The center for multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases has opened at the National Hospital in Bishkek on May 27. "These diseases are rare, they affect the nerve system and lead in causes of disability of people of working age. Opening of this center was necessary in connection with growth of people with such diagnosis in Kyrgyzstan. According to WHO, around 2.3 million people live with such diagnoses in the world," Neurology Departmnet Chief Nurjan Japaralieva said.
The center will provide consultations on diagnostics and pathogenetic therapy, monitoring of its effectiveness, will register patients with demyelinating diseases, will offer seminars and trainings for health professionals, will carry out research projects.
The clinical protocol on multiple sclerosis is being prepared now for further approval by the Ministry of Health.
Multiple sclerosis is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. The immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between brain and the rest of human body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves.
Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary widely and depend on the amount of nerve damage and which nerves are affected.
There is no cure for multiple sclerosis. However, treatments can help speed recovery from attacks, modify the course of the disease and manage symptoms.
