AKIPRESS.COM - MP Dastan Bekeshev raised the problem of water scarcity on June 10 in the Parliament. The shortage of water is observed in Bishkek and in the villages, while the government can't give an answer, he said.
"Someone says that because of global warming, the glaciers are melting faster resulting in water scarcity. Well, it doesn't happen that way. Not a lot of people are engaged in irrigation, few people clean up and build irrigation canals, especially in Chui region, there are conflicts, recently there was a rally near the government, but so far there is no clear answer when these problems will be solved," he said.
"Water shortages can lead to really big conflicts. It's not a fight against corruption, where you can put everyone in prison. Ordinary, angry citizens will take to streets because they don't have enough water for their fields. Even in Bishkek the water shortage can be felt already," the MP said.
Bekeshev asked the Cabinet of Ministers to meet over the issue and work out a clear plan of what to do to ensure that irrigation is clean and water is plentiful.
