AKIPRESS.COM - More than 1,000 refugees from Afghanistan's Badakhshan, mostly women, children and elderly people, were sheltered in safe places in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan, region administration's press secretary Golib Niyatbekov told Asia-Plus.
Non-governmental organizations thanked the government of Tajikistan for giving shelter to refugees, he said.
The date when refugees crossed the border into Tajikistan was not specified. This could probably happen on July 4-5 when Taliban captured 6 districts of Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan.
Gorno-Badakhshan Region Governor Yodgor Faizov said earlier the situation in Afghanistan makes us ensure internal stability, protect land and act in response in case the border is violated. He also warned about refugees.
On July 5, the Border Troops of Tajikistan said 1,037 military personnel of Afghan government forces had to retreat to the territory of Tajikistan after fierce clashes with Taliban. The total number of Afghan military personnel crossing the border into Tajikistan reached almost 1,500.
According to the National Security Council of Afghanistan, more Afghan soldiers fled to Tajikistan and 2,300 of them were repatriated already.
