AKIPRESS.COM - In case of attack on Tajikistan from the border with Afghanistan, the Collective Security Treaty Organization will discuss the incident immediately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"If there is attack on Tajikistan, of course, this will be immediately considered by the CSTO," Lavrov said.
He reminded Moscow and Dushanbe are allies in the Collective Security Treaty and Russia has the military base in Tajikistan.
"We will fulfill our obligations of course," Tass cited Foreign Minister Lavrov as saying.
The Border Troops of Tajikistan said on Monday more than 1,000 Afghan government military personnel retreated to Tajikistan after skirmishes with Taliban fighters.
CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas said earlier the situation in the northern parts of Afghanistan is getting worse and arouses serious concerns.
He said assistance should be provided to Tajikistan in protection of its southern borders.
On July 1, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council adopted a statement on concerns about situation in Afghanistan and called upon all sides to advance peaceful process.
