AKIPRESS.COM - Operation of water treatment facilities was halted in Karakol on July 30, mayor Ermat Jumaev told a press conference.
The mudflows in the mountains resulted in water pollution reaching 80-90%, the mayor said.
"The situation with clean drinking water is one of critical issues now. Mudflows hit Issyk-Kul region, the water became dirty in sources. For this reason we halted operation of water treatment units. The dirt may damage water pipelines," the mayor said.
The mayor promised the problem with potable water will be solved within 2 years. "We have all conditions in place to supply clean water. One $10 million project was already signed. 20,000 meters will be installed and water pipelines will be connected into one network and this will allow to increase pressure of water in all districts of Karakol, the mayor said.
