Uranium tailings reclamation under EU project to begin in late 2019

Bishkek, May 8, 2019. / Kabar /. The reclamation of uranium tailings within the framework of the EU project will begin at the end of 2019, the press service of the European Union Delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic told Kabar News Agency.
The work may begin this year in case if all the issues with the Kyrgyz side are promptly agreed upon.
"At the same time, the total cost of work on seven selected sites in the region is estimated at EUR 85 million, of which 50 million have not been found yet. Therefore, it is extremely important to continue to work with potential donors, including the countries of Central Asia, to explain all environmental and safety risks in order to attract the missing funds," the report said.
The EU allocated additional EUR 10 million at the last donor conference on the reclamation of uranium facilities in Central Asia in November 2018. These funds complement the EUR 16 million provided by the European Union earlier for this purpose.
