AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakhstan mined 21,600 tons of uranium in 2018 and is ranked the second country in the world with the largest uranium reserves, said Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Energy Asset Magauov speaking about the nation's plans to launch a plant for the production of reactor fuel assemblies for nuclear power plants by the year end.
Total uranium reserves in Kazakhstan are estimate at 1.5 million tons.
Today, together with Chinese partners, Kazakhstan is building a plant for the production of reactor fuel assembly in Ust Kamenogorsk city, the plant will be commissioned by year end, he said. Construction began in 2016.
Commissioning of one more reactor fuel assembly Tokamak is also expected this year, he said.
Kazakhstan hosts 5 international monitoring stations that cover the entire Earth and can record nuclear tests globally, he said.
A project backed by Canadian partners on installation of a noble gas detection system in Kazakhstan is nearing completion, Magauov adds.
