AKIPRESS.COM - President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law on ratification of a Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, Akorda press service said. The treaty prohibits development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities. For nuclear armed states joining the treaty, it provides for a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination of its nuclear weapons programme.
The agreement was open for signing from September 20, 2017 within the 72nd UN General Assembly in New-York and will enter into force after ratification of the document by 50 countries. At this moment, the treaty was signed by 70 countries, ratified by 23 countries.
